Ergo Proxy's probably my favorite anime of all time. Monogatari and FMA come close, though I still need to watch more of the first to give a final verdict. I've also been reading a lot of Satoshi Kon's (Opus was sadly never finished) and Inio Asano's work these days, which I highly reccomend.
